She continued to pretend to sleep and closed her eyes while trying to place where he knew the man that was beside her.
She remembered his laughter that made her melt, his warm smile that made it impossible not to smile back, his touch that made her feel weak, his sad brown eyes that made her long to cross oceans for him.
But try as hard as she could, she couldn’t remember who he was.
She knows he was wide awake now, he could feel her staring at him while she lay with her eyes closed.
She could feel her eyes burn with tears as she tried to remember who this man was, she knows him from somewhere;
She remembered the feeling of… She stopped for a second, thinking of the word that would best describe what she felt.
‘Happiness’, yes, happiness she decided… She remembered feeling happy with him.
She longed to open her eyes and look at his face. She knows with just one look, he could make everything alright. He could chase away her fears, her hesitations, her anger, her confusion and her sadness…
But she was afraid that if she opens her eyes and look at him, all he would give her would be a blank stare.
She’s afraid he won’t recognize who she was, ‘Do you know who I am?’ she would have been forced to ask him and she’s too scared to hear his answer.
She took a calming breath and opened her eyes to find him looking at her.
She smiled brightly trying to disguise the sadness in her eyes, “Hello, stranger…” she said softly, trying not to choke on her tears.
He smiled his warm smile and everything came rushing back to her “Hello back”, he whispered.
